What is a Rain Garden?
Check out this site for more info http://nemo.uconn.edu/raingardens/index.htm
The rain garden has been tested with some torrential rains already this summer. It has filled up completely and it drains within 7 hours. Now the runoff from the roof goes back down into the ground to add to our drinking water supply.
The garden is almost complete

Above are pictures of the Rain Garden that I designed at the senior center.
Rain Gardens are extremely beneficial to our rivers and streams because they reduce greatly the amount of sediment runoff and chemical runoff from things like roofs, driveways, and roads. They also create a great place to plant native plants, which will thrive with very little maintenance, and attract wildlife like birds and butterflies. For more info on how to size, build, and plant a Rain Garden, check out this site; UCONN Rain Gardens/ NEMO. You can also call your local Uconn Extension center for more help.
